Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4847651471\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4152\/4847651471_fb793de106_z.jpg\" alt=\"&amp;quot;Jonathan&amp;quot;, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia\" width=\"428\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><strong>Total Miles Traveled:<\/strong> 30,574<\/div>\n<p>C&#8217;mon, you have to chuckle when you see a Proboscis monkey (pictured above). \u00a0The guy has a phallic nose, a pot belly, and seems to always be &#8220;ready for some action,&#8221; if you know what I mean. \u00a0Proboscis monkeys are found only in Borneo and are an endangered species because the jungle is being chopped down to plant palm trees for palm oil. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite a sad sight to see miles and miles of palm plantations, but the country is hungry for development and palm oil is lucrative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4847655801\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4130\/4847655801_c48c3729d2_z.jpg\" alt=\"Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we saw photos of the Proboscis monkeys (above is a mama Proboscis with her child), we knew we had to go seem them &#8211; and boy were we glad we did. \u00a0 We visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proboscis.cc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary<\/a> (in Sepilok, near Sandakan, $60RM per person or $20USD) which is private land bought up to preserve the rainforest and the native habitat for the monkeys.<br \/>\n<small><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-align: left;\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=embed&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=labuk+bay+proboscis+monkey+sabah+malaysia&amp;sll=34.052234,-118.243685&amp;sspn=1.185564,2.705383&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=labuk+bay+proboscis+monkey&amp;hnear=Sabah,+Malaysia&amp;cid=13174822839156907835&amp;ll=5.878332,118.037109&amp;spn=5.243896,7.020264&amp;z=7&amp;iwloc=A\">View Larger Map<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>While the monkeys are wild, the park rangers have scheduled feeding times where they bring out sugar-free pancakes (they don&#8217;t like sugar) and what looked liked watermelon rinds to feed the various families of monkeys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Local fruit and sugar free pancakes for feeding the monkeys by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4847659275\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4106\/4847659275_23524b9279_z.jpg\" alt=\"Hornbill named Ki Ki\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, we went to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center to check out young orphaned\/injured orangutans being rehab&#8217;d for life back in the wild. \u00a0 Orangutans are an endangered species and only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra (Indonesia).<\/p>\n<p>As a note to future travelers, the morning feeding at this place is supposed to be super crowded with tourists, so the afternoon is the time to go. \u00a0But unfortunately for us, only a young female showed up. \u00a0 It was still fun to see this one showboat for tourists taking photos. \u00a0 If you want to take it a step further, you can go stay in the jungle along the Kinabatangan river and see these guys in the wild, National Geographic-style.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, Sabah, Malaysia by T.
