Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4913458794\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4141\/4913458794_ec5fe71d2a_z.jpg\" alt=\"Street - Penang, Malaysia\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Total Miles Traveled:<\/strong> 32,450<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Seriously our journey is not about food (no really it&#8217;s not!). \u00a0It just happens that everywhere we go in Asia, there is amazing food to be eaten. \u00a0We certainly don&#8217;t mind, as long as our waistlines don&#8217;t get any bigger!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/travelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/map_penang.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-737\" title=\"map_penang\" src=\"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/travelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/map_penang.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Penang is known to most as an island (it&#8217;s also a state) in northwest Malaysia near the border with Thailand. The main &#8211; and most historical &#8211; city is Georgetown. \u00a0Penang is also the high-tech capital of Malaysia with companies like Dell and Intel doing manufacturing there. \u00a0 It even boasts free public wifi in town, although we could never get it to work. \u00a0 Good attempt though, and a big plus for us lovers of free wifi. \u00a0It&#8217;s also one of two states in Malaysia with a majority ethnic Chinese population, the other being <a href=\"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/2010\/08\/03\/melaka-food-heaven-found\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melaka<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"You-tiao supplier, Penang, Malaysia by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4912844417\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4137\/4912844417_8ac72cf8df_z.jpg\" alt=\"You-tiao supplier, Penang, Malaysia\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">You Tiao (translated &quot;oil stick&quot;) - a Chinese churro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Penang is probably better known for its delicious food; if you consider yourself a foodie, you must make a pilgrimage to Penang. \u00a0Penangites are extremely passionate about their food &#8211; there are countless blogs and websites dedicated to trying, reviewing, and photographing every restaurant on Penang Island. \u00a0You can search for the BEST of whatever it is you want to eat, be it curry mee (noodles), or nyonya food. \u00a0And some people will swear that the ONLY place to get curry mee is at this food cart on that street at the corner of X and Y streets. \u00a0Yes, that specific.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So Penang &#8211; in a nutshell &#8211; is on an ocean, has high tech, has great food, and is a city for foodies&#8230; hmmmmm, sounds a bit like San Francisco! \u00a0 Minus the wine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After spending an afternoon walking around Georgetown (and enduring intense heat and\u00a0humidity), we spent most of our time in Penang eating. Imagine that!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s a guy outside of Hameediyah (on Campbell Street in Georgetown) making fresh murtabak.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Hameediyah street cart selling murtabak, Penang, Malaysia by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4912866565\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And as if your excellent meal wasn&#8217;t enough to entertain you, the Red Garden Food Paradise puts on a live show every night, with a guy on his keyboard belting out American oldies. \u00a0Bizarre, but you can&#8217;t help but smile. \u00a0Notice the sign, &#8220;no guest singer&#8221; and check out his HAT! \u00a0YES! \u00a0Awesome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Red Garden Food Paradise Live Entertainment by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4912867627\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4094\/4912867627_58e7763768_z.jpg\" alt=\"Penang, Malaysia\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, Penang is known for its Baba Nyonya culture. \u00a0If you&#8217;ll recall in an earlier post about <a href=\"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/2010\/08\/03\/melaka-food-heaven-found\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melaka<\/a>, it&#8217;s a fusion of Chinese and Malay cuisine which makes for interesting dishes that you probably won&#8217;t have anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s fried basil leaves. \u00a0Pretty neat in concept, but I think much of the basil flavor was lost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Nyonya Breeze, Penang by T.
