{"id":769,"date":"2010-08-21T21:51:58","date_gmt":"2010-08-21T14:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/?p=769"},"modified":"2010-08-21T21:51:58","modified_gmt":"2010-08-21T14:51:58","slug":"while-we-were-in-koh-lanta-we","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/travelblog\/2010\/08\/21\/while-we-were-in-koh-lanta-we\/","title":{"rendered":"While we were in Koh Lanta, we&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; did things like attending cooking class, fruit carving class, and 1:1 personal training with Ken. \u00a0Yes, Ken, a fitting name for a fitness instructor, no? \u00a0 Now THIS is an inspiring story&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ken&#8217;s from Bangalore, India, where he had worked in the IT division of an investment bank. \u00a0Well, he had had enough of the shitty corporate life working night shifts, so he started looking on the internet for yoga instructor jobs abroad, and lo and behold, he landed his gig at the Layana after a couple of phone interviews. \u00a0What a lucky guy. \u00a0AND, guess what? \u00a0He had never left India before. \u00a0Wow. \u00a0And you could tell he was both scared and super psyched. \u00a0We think he&#8217;s going to do just fine. \u00a0Anyway, Ken was a great trainer and we wished we could have had him help us work off our Argentina fat.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, we also signed up for a cooking class. \u00a0We served up some chicken in red curry, spicy seafood salad with glass noodles, and tom yum goong (spicy prawn soup).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Cooking Class at the Tides Restaurant, Layana Resort by T. It was hard &#8211; you have to be really good with an exacto knife and have a good sense of 3D geometry. \u00a0Or risk butchering the fruit or worse, your own fingers! \u00a0 Here&#8217;s my instructor, Tui, making a carrot flower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Fruit carving class at Layana Resort by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4946196884\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, the other things we carved were a bit easier and made for a nice display. \u00a0There were leaves made out of carrots, curled spring onions, red pepper flowers, carrot flowers, tomato skin roses.<\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t just do fun stuff. \u00a0We had to do laundry, too&#8230; in the bathtub. \u00a0 Yes, Layana was perfect in just about every way. \u00a0If our room had a kitchen and laundry machine, we&#8217;d probably just move in and you&#8217;d be coming out to visit us in Thailand. \u00a0Just kidding. \u00a0Here&#8217;s Lisa doing a big load &#8211; we were down to our last outfits!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Layana Resort and Spa, Ko Lanta, Thailand by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4946187470\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now for a random note: \u00a0I think this is the first praying mantis I&#8217;ve seen live. \u00a0It was hanging out on the table cloth getting ready to climb up to the table. \u00a0A waiter picked it up by its neck to show other people, but eventually got nicked by those sharp front legs. \u00a0Yowza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Praying Mantis by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4946196884\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4086\/4946196884_bdffd8a994_z.jpg\" alt=\"Going to Saladan, Ko Lanta\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Well, not much unfortunately. \u00a0It was a ghost town because of low season. \u00a0BUT, I did get the BEST HAIRCUT I&#8217;ve ever gotten for $3. \u00a0I know, I know &#8211; how hard can it be, shaving one&#8217;s head? \u00a0Well, trust me, one can miss hairs and not trim the edges well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The other thing was, it was HOT. \u00a0So hot, you have to adapt&#8230; like this dog. \u00a0Sleeping on a cold stone bench in the shade. \u00a0Smart dog. \u00a0But he doesn&#8217;t look very comfortable&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Layana Resort and Spa, Ko Lanta, Thailand by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/4945618079\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4127\/4945618079_c8c7e07610_z.jpg\" alt=\"Layana Resort and Spa, Ko Lanta, Thailand\" width=\"428\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The best thing to do in the heat was get out of it. \u00a0So after 1.5 hours, including lunch, we high-tailed it back to the hotel to jump in the pool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Alas, it had to come to an end&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We were sad to leave the Layana. \u00a0The staff had started to remember how we liked our mixed drinks and what food we liked at what spiciness level. \u00a0Yes, we were pampered. \u00a0And we will be back again. \u00a0 You should go too. \u00a0Seriously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Layana Resort and Spa, Ko Lanta, Thailand by T.
