{"id":990,"date":"2010-11-30T00:46:46","date_gmt":"2010-11-29T17:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/?p=990"},"modified":"2010-11-30T00:46:46","modified_gmt":"2010-11-29T17:46:46","slug":"eating-our-way-through-tokyo-our-best-food-day-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lisaandtony.com\/travelblog\/2010\/11\/30\/eating-our-way-through-tokyo-our-best-food-day-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating Our Way Through Tokyo: Our Best Food Day Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s over. \u00a0Tokyo has ruined us. \u00a0The food was already amazing in other parts of Asia&#8230;and then we had <strong>our best food day ever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We knew we wanted to eat sushi in Tokyo, so our friend Adam told us to check out Kyubei in the Ginza district. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t going to be cheap, but we didn&#8217;t care. \u00a0Incidentally, he had mentioned another sushi\u00a0restaurant\u00a0that cost $350\/head! \u00a0Can you believe that? \u00a0Sushi for $350 per person? \u00a0And\u00a0apparently\u00a0you&#8217;re out of there in 30 minutes. \u00a0Fortunately, Kyubei was not that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anyway, Kyubei is located in a narrow side street in a non-descript building&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/5223546689\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4085\/5223546689_d44fc96463_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Inside, it&#8217;s tiny &#8211; at most, it seats 15 people. \u00a0It&#8217;s a very traditional sushi bar filled with locals. \u00a0We had to wait upstairs for about 20 minutes before we were called to our seats at the counter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/5223540583\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4131\/5223540583_09bcd852c5_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When the waiter asks what we wanted, we both said one word in unison: &#8220;omakase.&#8221; \u00a0For those not familiar with the term, it literally means &#8220;it&#8217;s up to you&#8221; but is a phrase used in restaurants to signify &#8220;chef&#8217;s choice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We embarked on what we later counted to be a 14-course meal of sushi, sashimi, rolls, soup, and dessert. \u00a0 You could really taste the difference in the quality of the fish! \u00a0The shrimps pictured below are still breathing &#8211; one even flicked itself off the plate!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/5223539805\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5245\/5223539805_b0cb60dc42_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But that wasn&#8217;t the only difference. \u00a0The service here was really great. \u00a0In addition to asking what you didn&#8217;t eat, they also asked how much rice you wanted on each sushi piece, whether you wanted salt or soy sauce, or whether you wanted a certain fish raw or cooked. And the green tea was always replaced regularly to make sure it was hot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Back to the meal&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Uni (sea urchin). \u00a0 The quality varies a lot and I think that&#8217;s why some people won&#8217;t go near it. \u00a0 \u00a0You&#8217;ll see in a future post on our visit to the Tsukiji market, that there are several different grades of uni with a huge price differential. \u00a0The lower quality stuff, we feel, has a strong chemical aftertaste and it&#8217;s really quite off-putting &#8211; you know it as soon as you put it in your mouth. \u00a0The high quality uni has no aftertaste at all. \u00a0It has a soft slightly salty creaminess to it&#8230; really really good! \u00a0Our sushi chef makes our uni&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/5223545501\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4148\/5223545501_72b3d2c6e9_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kyubei Sushi, Ginza, Tokyo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We left Kyubei thinking we had just had one of the best sushi experiences in our lives and decided to just spend the rest of the day wandering and shopping in the Harajuku area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But then dinner time rolled around. \u00a0Tony had read about a place called<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> &#8220;Agaru Sagaru Nishi-Iru Higashi-Iru&#8221; &#8211; it&#8217;s a mouthful isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0The restaurant served &#8220;kaiseki&#8221; which is supposed to be a formal multi-course Kyoto cuisine, but the style of this place was more casual and modern. \u00a0The\u00a0restaurant\u00a0was actually below ground &#8211; and looked like a cave.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Agaru Sagaru Nishi-Iru Higashi-Iru, Harujuku by T. Chen, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tony-chen\/5234841911\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5084\/5234841911_cd6ffc4c62_z.jpg\" alt=\"Agaru Sagaru Nishi-Iru Higashi-Iru, Harujuku\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Like many other restaurants in Tokyo, the chef and staff prepare the food right in front of the patrons, so we made sure to sit at the counter so we could have the best view. \u00a0We had never had a kaiseki-style meal before but knew we were in for a treat when we found out what it is&#8230; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaiseki\">Kaiseki<\/a> is a multi-course menu that follows a traditional sequence of preparation styles. \u00a0As each dish arrives the waiter provides detailed explanations of the many seasonal ingredients incorporated therein, right down to the origins of the miso paste and seasonings. \u00a0Alas in our case, we were foiled by language issues, but that didn&#8217;t stop us from enjoying what is probably our best dinner ever! \u00a0\u00a0Both the presentation and the flavor were beautiful!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Because it was so perfect from the first drink to the last bite of dessert, we present you, our best dinner ever. \u00a0First up, the sake. \u00a0As is common in Japan, we got to choose our own sake glasses. \u00a0Note how each glass is unique. Love it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Agaru Sagaru Nishi-Iru Higashi-Iru, Harujuku by T.
